Heinrich Hosts State-Wide Teleconference To Discuss Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) hosted a teleconference with more than 40 immigration advocacy organizations and community leaders across New Mexico to answer questions and discuss the pressing need to pass accountable immigration reform. 

During the call, Senator Heinrich stressed the importance creating a fair path to earn citizenship and that a commitment to reform our country’s immigration system also requires a commitment to our students.

He told conference call participants, “As the son of an immigrant, I know well the importance of fixing our broken immigration system. Undocumented immigrants are contributing members of our community and economy. They want to work, earn a living, and go to school without fear of being separated from their families. Two million of these individuals are DREAMers and represent much of what’s best about our nation: hard work, motivation, and a willingness to serve this country in uniform. I am determined to see the principals of the DREAM Act incorporated into the legislation.”

Senator Heinrich also fielded questions about the challenge of continuing to ensure our nation’s safety, while balancing the need of our border communities to thrive and benefit from their unique bi-national culture and economy. He specified his support for the initiative to extend the Border Commercial Zone to allow Mexicans who have been security screened by the Department of Homeland Security to travel along the Interstate-10 corridor of New Mexico to shop, conduct business, and visit family as a way to bolster economic activity in the region.

Additionally, Senator Heinrich discussed the need to increase the number of U visas as part of accountable immigration reform. U visas grant temporary status to undocumented victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes if they are willing to cooperate with law enforcement. He said, “Making sure that we increase the caps of [U Visas] is a very important part in any comprehensive immigration bill that moves forward.”

Senator Heinrich concluded the call speaking in Spanish. He said, “Esta es una gran oportunidad para reformar nuestro sistema migratorio. Nuevo México desea una solución, los DREAMers necesitan una solución, y nuestra economía exige una solución. Este año, es nuestro año.”

(Translation: “This is an opportunity to reform our immigration system. New Mexicans are eager for a solution, DREAMers deserve a solution, and our economy requires a solution. This is our year.”)

El Senador Heinrich Sostiene una Teleconferencia con Activistas de Todo el Estado para Hablar sobre La Reforma Migratoria

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – El Senador de Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) sostuvo una teleconferencia con más de 40 organizaciones y activistas de inmigración de todo el estado para contestar preguntas y hablar sobre la necesidad de pasar una reforma migratoria responsable.

Durante la llamada, el Senador Heinrich subrayo la importancia del DREAM Act, de las Visas tipo U y apoyó la creación de un camino a la ciudadanía

“Como hijo de inmigrantes, reconozco la importancia de arreglar nuestro anticuado sistema migratorio. Los inmigrantes indocumentados son miembros importantes de nuestra comunidad y de nuestra economía”, dijo el Sen. Heinrich. “Ellos solo quieren trabajar, ganarse la vida, e ir a la escuela sin el temor de ser separados de sus familias.

Dos millones de estas personas son DREAMers y representan gran parte de lo mejor de nuestra nación: trabajo duro, la motivación y la voluntad de servir a este país en uniforme. Estoy decidido a ver los principios del DREAM Act incorporados a la legislación.”

Senador Heinrich también respondió a preguntas sobre el reto de seguir para garantizar la seguridad de nuestra nación, al tiempo que equilibran las necesidades de nuestras comunidades fronterizas para prosperar y beneficiarse de su único bi-nacional, la cultura y la economía. Precisó su apoyo a la iniciativa de ampliar la Zona Comercial Fronteriza para permitir que los mexicanos que han sido seleccionados por la seguridad del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional para viajar a lo largo de la Carretera Interestatal 10 de Nuevo México para ir de compras, hacer negocios y visitar a la familia como una forma de para impulsar la actividad económica en la región.

Por otra parte, el senador Heinrich discutió la necesidad de aumentar el número de visas U como parte de una reforma migratoria responsable. Visas U concesión temporal de estado para las víctimas indocumentadas de violencia doméstica, asalto sexual y otros delitos violentos si están dispuestos a cooperar con la policía.
