Heinrich Denounces Senate Republicans For Blocking John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

WASHINGTON (Nov. 3, 2021) – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after 49 of the 50 Republicans used the filibuster to block the Senate from starting debate on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This marks the fourth time this year that Senate Republicans have filibustered an attempt to begin debate on legislation to secure election systems and protect Americans’ voting rights.

“The time for make-believe that 10 Republicans will help us protect our democracy is over. Democrats must come together to pass legislation that guarantees every single lawful American can access the ballot. If that means abolishing or reforming the filibuster, we should do that."
