Heinrich Cosponsors Resolutions To Commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month And Designate National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the U.S. Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, cosponsored two resolutions to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month and to designate September 15, 2013 - September 21, 2013 as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week. The resolutions passed the Senate by Unanimous Consent.
"During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the countless contributions, achievements, and sacrifices of Hispanic Americans. In New Mexico, the Hispanic community has been integral to enriching our state's history and culture," said Sen. Heinrich. "Hispanic-Serving Institutions across New Mexico also serve a tremendous role in our communities by educating our students, training our workforce, and developing the next generation of New Mexican leaders. I remain deeply committed to fighting for the issues that matter most to New Mexico's Hispanic community, and look forward to working in partnership to ensure the American dream is within reach for our children and grandchildren."
There are currently 23 Hispanic-Serving Institutions in New Mexico, including the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University.
Hispanic-Serving Institutions are non-profit degree-granting institutions with Full-Time Equivalent undergraduate enrollments and are at least 25 percent Hispanic. In 2011-2012, 356 institutions met the federal enrollment criterion, enrolling 1,480,722 Hispanic undergraduates and graduate students in postsecondary (non-profit) schools.
