WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 29, 2015) - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement marking the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson signing Medicare and Medicaid into law on July 30, 1965:
"For 50 years Medicare and Medicaid have improved the quality of life of our seniors, people with disabilities, children, and families. It was New Mexico's very own Clinton P. Anderson, who was a principal sponsor of the original Senate Medicare bill, which led to the successful program we know today.
"Medicare and Medicaid keep our communities healthy and contribute to the well-being of those most in need. It is imperative that we continue to strengthen and improve these programs so that New Mexicans can continue to benefit from them for the next 50 years and beyond."
