By every definition, Roy Hopper is an American war hero.
He stormed the beaches of Normandy in June, 1944.
He was captured by the Nazis and held a prisoner of war.
For his service, he was awarded several medals including the prestigious Bronze Star.
Roy is hospitalized at the VA hospital in Albuquerque after a terrible fall in late April.
While in the VA with a broken hip, somebody burglarized Roy's house and stole all of those medals that he earned.
US Senator Martin Heinrich watched KOB Eyewitness News 4's story Monday night and has instructed his staff to find Roy Hopper and work on getting those medals replaced.
"I hope your story got some attention and he can get his original medals back with his name inscribed on the back," Heinrich said. "If that's not possible, we're here to make sure he gets replacement medals for every single medal he's earned."
Senator Heinrich reached out to KOB to see how we could help his staff work with Roy Hopper. We were grateful to lend our assistance to help create a better resolution to this story. As the senator mentioned, the original medals would be better. Keep an eye out on craigslist, pawn shops, or antique stores. Call APD if you can help.
