A commitment to restore the middle class
Last year, I said I would work hard every day to restore the basic bargain on which this country was built, that if you work hard and play by the rules you can get ahead. That was my commitment then and remains my commitment to you today.
This year presents new opportunities for Congress to work together in a bipartisan, bicameral way to foster an environment that creates good jobs, trains our work force and restores New Mexico’s middle class.
We saw a good example of bipartisanship when Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act, with which I helped lead the effort to include a provision to expand White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). This expansion is critical to strengthening WSMR’s vital national security mission and will further protect it from encroachment.
Southern New Mexico’s rich culture and history has not only helped contribute to the local economy through tourism and outdoor recreation, but the region has also always played an integral role in our national security.
A commitment to restore our middle class also requires a commitment to our veterans. Those who have served this country in uniform deserve more than just words of gratitude for their sacrifice when they return home – they deserve timely access to top-notch care and benefits.
Last year, in an effort to keep America’s promise to our veterans, I proudly introduced a bill that would help reduce the veterans disability claims backlog. This commonsense approach would accelerate the claims process while reducing the number of backlog claims. One of the most important jobs I have is helping New Mexicans when they are having trouble with a federal agency. My office can help with things such as Social Security benefits, Medicare, immigration issues, veterans’ benefits and other federal programs.
