We cannot accept political violence

Dear Friend,

As I’ve visited with New Mexicans today, my mind has continued to return to this weekend’s horrific events in Butler, Pennsylvania.

My deepest sympathies are with those grieving Corey Comperatore, who died shielding his family from the spray of bullets. I am hoping for healing and recovery for Donald Trump and others who were wounded.

It is clear that the divisiveness in our country is untenable. We have seen with painful clarity what happens when fear becomes hate, and hate becomes violence.

We cannot accept political violence.

From large rallies to the family dinner table, we need to turn the temperature down and see each other as people first.

We can disagree and still treat each other with respect. We can and must come together as neighbors, classmates, and friends, in recognition of our common ground. I practice that nearly every day working with my colleagues across the aisle, and I am committed to continuing that work.

We need to recommit to our shared humanity and our democracy.

We each have enormous power in our democracy. It's imperative that we exercise that power with our voices and our votes. NEVER violence.

It is my promise to use the responsibilities entrusted to me by New Mexicans to help families succeed and continue the work of building a stronger, safer, and more civil democracy for the good of all Americans.

Sincerely,

MARTIN HEINRICH
