Only one week left to fill out the census

Dear Friend,

There is only one week left before the September 30 deadline to fill out the 2020 Census. I truly wish that the picture of this year's Census in New Mexico looked better than it does. Unfortunately, if the census stays on its current course, we will see a significant undercount of New Mexicans. Right now, our state is on track to have one of the lowest response rates in the entire country. That will mean potentially devastating impacts for our state.

An incomplete count will reduce tens of millions of dollars in critical federal funding for New Mexicans for each of the next ten years. That's because the amount of us who complete the census helps determine how much representation our communities have in Congress, and also sets federal funding levels that affect schools, roads, hospitals, and so much else. Regardless of our address or our home language, we are all New Mexicans, and the census has a constitutional obligation to count each of us.

Please fill out the census if you have not already done so. You can respond online to the census. If you prefer to respond by phone, you can call 844-330-2020 for English or 844-468-2020 for Spanish between 9 a.m. MT and 4 p.m. MT. You can find a list of phone numbers for options to respond in other languages here. You can also respond by following these directions to mail in the paper questionnaire that was sent to you.

Even with just one week left, each of us can make a real difference for New Mexico by filling out the census. After you've filled it out, call and text your friends and family members--and maybe forward this email--to be sure they have done the same.

Sincerely,

MARTIN HEINRICH
