Healthy meals for our kids

Dear Friend,

A few weeks ago, I sat down for lunch with students at Inez Science & Technology Magnet School in Albuquerque.

My visit came just days after we advanced my legislation out of the Senate Appropriations Committee that includes full funding for vital U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrition programs that benefit families and children across our state and will help farmers continue to produce healthy food.

Unfortunately, at a time when many families have been struggling to make ends meet, my Republican colleagues have tried to pass funding cuts to USDA nutrition programs—including WIC, SNAP, and the School Lunch Program—and impose unnecessary red tape on working families. Not on my watch.

Our kids should be able to focus on learning, growing, and making new friends. Not worrying about when they will eat their next meal. That’s why I have stood firm, every step of the way, to maintain our full support for USDA nutrition programs that help families and children keep healthy food on the table.

I will always go to bat for New Mexico families. That includes working to ensure child care is more accessible and home ownership is within reach, and creating solid jobs that New Mexicans can build their families around in their home communities.

When we invest in our children, in their families, and in their schools, we invest in our future.

Sincerely,

MARTIN HEINRICH
United States Senator
