Dear Friend,
The science is indisputable that carbon emissions are fueling more destructive wildfires, reducing our snowpack, and contributing to the worst drought that New Mexico has experienced in 1,200 years. If we fail to curb this pollution, we risk significantly greater damage to our landscapes, watersheds, and health. Yet the U.S. Supreme Court just narrowed one of our most important regulatory tools to address a key aspect of reducing our emissions from the energy and industrial sectors.
The ruling yesterday by the radical-conservative and wildly out-of-touch majority on the Supreme Court to jeopardize the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector is infuriating and harmful to our children’s future. It also creates even more urgency for the EPA to follow the science and use its full scope of authorities to protect communities and reduce pollution.
This disgraceful ruling also underscores the need for Congress to pass major climate and clean energy investments, and hopefully inspires more collaboration and more bold and decisive climate actions from our leaders in state, local, and Tribal governments and in the private sector.
We all have a role to play in addressing this greatest problem of our generation with solutions that will make a real difference.
Sincerely,
MARTIN HEINRICH
United States Senator
