Dear Friend,
I am pleased that President Trump finally put an end his prolonged, costly, and unnecessary shutdown. For over a month, he thrust our country into the longest government shutdown in history, using federal workers and contractors as bargaining chips, and leaving long lasting damage to our communities. Now we must ensure our federal workers and contractors are made whole and receive their back pay as soon as possible.
Yesterday morning, while President Trump's chaos and clear lack of serious leadership continued to hold Washington - and all Americans - hostage, I was excited to address the New Mexico Legislature in Santa Fe about how we can build a new beginning for our state.
I hope you can take a moment to watch and read my speech.

The start of the Lujan Grisham administration and this legislative session represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to turn New Mexico around. New Mexicans have been waiting for and demanding energetic, optimistic leadership in Santa Fe. I believe we have that in Governor Lujan Grisham and the new faces in the Legislature.
During my speech, I called on legislators to take immediate action to finally make investments in early childhood education, adopt an aggressive renewable energy portfolio, grow the state's outdoor recreation economy, and tackle the multigenerational cycle of poverty that's held New Mexico back for far too long.
I encourage you to work with your representatives in the Legislature, Governor Lujan Grisham, and me to finally change the trajectory of our state.
Sincerely,
MARTIN HEINRICH
United States Senator
