WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, released the following statement regarding Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s meetings with the Russian Ambassador:
“Attorney General Sessions needs to come clean and testify under oath and answer questions in a public hearing. If he committed perjury or even misled or knowingly withheld information from Congress and the American people, then he should resign.
“With the lengths that this White House is willing to go to hide and blur President Trump's Russia connections, it's clear that we need to go even further with an investigation. The Intelligence Committee investigation will proceed, but an independent commission or special prosecutor is also needed to effectively investigate the Trump campaign's connections to Russia. That should also include a subpoena for the President's taxes so that we can follow the money and find real answers to what they are hiding.
“There should be no stone left unturned. If we do not take this seriously, our fundamental Democratic institutions are at further risk of manipulation by foreign powers.”
